There is nothing more critical to the success of dog training than your attitude. Your mindset is more important than the equipment you purchase, the training method used, or the breed of your dog. Nothing can destroy the likelihood of effective trainng more quickly than you having the wrong outlook on the training process.

Dogs naturally crave and enjoy human companionship. When you approach your dog in the right way, he is particularly receptive to learning and developing a strong desire to act in the manner that will please you. This why a proper attitude is exceedingly important with respect to training. When you are pleasant, your dog will be pleasant. When you are excited about teaching, your dog will most likely be excited about learning. Your dog will often reflect your attitude and disposition.

The proper outlook on dog training will make the experience infinitely more enjoyable. A pleasant training experience will naturally produce better instruction on your part. Again, proper attitude will pay training dividends.

So what is the right attitude to bring to your dogs training sessions? You should strive to maintain a proper perspective at all time and should strive for a mood that makes the process fun for both your dog and you. Failure to approach training with such an attitude risks disaster.

You should be positive. A positive perspective works in conjunction with whatever behavior you are training your dog. Effective training requires positive reinforcement and that kind of reward is best administered by someone who presents a positive attitude.

Most importantly you must always remember that dog training is supposed to be fun. It should be fun for you and just as fun for your dog. The idea is to make the training process exciting and enjoyable for your dog as much as possible. By making the process a fun and rewarding, your dog will be motivated to listen to you and perform.

Puppies don't chew because they are "bad" but because, like any toddler, it's how they experience the world. Teething babies of all species need something to chew to relieve the irritation of new teeth coming in. Your job is to provide ACCEPTABLE outlets for these chewing activities.

When your dog picks up something he shouldn't, trade him for something much more interesting that he SHOULD play with AND make a big deal about the toy you have to offer! Rotate his toys and chews to keep them interesting. When you see him choose the right thing notice it! Praise him and have a quick game. Most dogs steal things because it is certain to get you out of your chair. Catch me if you can is an awfully fun game - for your dog ........

Toys fall into two categories: INTERACTIVE and PACIFIER.

Pacifier toys are toys designed to keep the bored dog occupied. Provide Safe Pacifiers for "alone times": Toys that fall into this category are: treat stuffed Kongs, nylabones, knotted ropes, rawhide, pigs ears, real bones, stuffed toys, rubber and vinyl toys, and the list is endless. Give toys that fit YOUR puppy's style of chewing. For example, do not give soft stuffed toys if his chewing opens the toys & un-stuffs it. Too big of bites of anything, including bones can be harmful. Know your puppy and remember, his pacifier toys will need to change with his age and chewing style.

Interactive toys are toys which are the most fun played with YOU. Interactive toys is anything that is fun when played with you. Throwing a ball, wading in a pool, fetching a stick, whatever entertains you and your canine friend.

And please, do not leave your puppy unsupervised.

If your puppy gets into things it's not supposed to and you're in another room, then shame on you, not shame on your puppy.
